Announcing the AMP-25 Series

We are excited to introduce our brand-new AMP-25 amplifiers!

The AMP-25 series do more than just amplify a signal, they also purify your signal as it passes through! We are also thrilled to present a whole new way to connect with amplifiers, allowing you to use a handheld mic and built-in speaker – just as if it were a mobile or base radio (but at a significantly lower cost).

An intelligent handheld radio companion:
A new and easy way to get the most from your radio, this is not your grandpa’s amplifier.
Output of 20-40W (from 2-6W input).
Works with most FM analog and digital modes (even including DMR!)
Transmit a cleaner output signal produced by your handheld radio.
Multiple ways to connect and use your handheld from a vehicle (or field) environment – without programming a duplicate radio.

What is it?The BTECH AMP-V25 amplifier is a portable, lightweight, wide coverage RF power amplifier for handheld radio equipment and is equally capable of amplifying both analog and digital signals.

Pair with the UT-72 Antenna for easy installation to your vehicle, or connect to another VHF base, mobile, or field antenna.

Supported Amplification Modes :The AMP-V25 operates from 136-174 MHz and can be used for analog FM, P25 Phase 1, C4FM (System Fusion), NXDN, IDAS, dPMR, and MPT1327 modes.

The AMP-V25 supports out-of-band transmitting, while the amplifier is turned off, allowing you to quickly transmit on a UHF signal without disconnecting your radio – but simply turning it off. When transmitting out-of-band the amplifier will pass-through the signal without amplification.

Built In Loud-Speaker :When you connect your handheld radio with the radio control cable; the amplifier will use it’s own loud 4W built-in speaker to broadcast the incoming audio.

$87.89

JOTA 2018 Patches to be Available this Summer

The patch design for the US Jamboree on the Air 2018 (JOTA) has been selected by the National Radio Scouting Committee. BSA Supply expects to have patches available this summer.

National JOTA Coordinator Jim Wilson, K5ND, said it’s never too early to begin planning for JOTA, and quite a bit of information to help in planning is available, including JOTA CountdownJOTA Station Planning, and JOTA Event Tips. A podcast on JOTA-JOTI (Jamboree on the Internet) operations from Scouting Stuff You Should Know may also be useful. “It provides a Canadian perspective, but it’s sound advice for any location,” Wilson said.

The National Radio Scouting Committee has developed a draft Troop Meeting Plan for Radio. Looking ahead, next year is the World Scout Jamboree at The Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve in West Virginia. To recognize the first North American World Jamboree — hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the US — the call sign NA1WJ has been secured for the event.

More information is in the World Scout Jamboree Amateur Radio Operational Vision document.

WinLink Radio Email with Yaesu FT-891

“Hello operators A few operators have left comments with concerns about the reported USB clicking on the Yaesu ft-891. Apparently one or more operators has had issues with sounds interfering with RX, while the radio is connected to a computer using CAT control. To take the issue a step further, some operators have said digital mode operations with this radio are impossible.

Let’s call them out to see if that’s true! https://youtu.be/HwmZzOrUkP4 As you’ll see in the video, the closest I was able to come to replicating the USB clicking problems, was by using the worst possible USB cable that I could find. That cable came from China via eBay! Moreover I’m also using this radio with PCALE, wsjt-x, fldigi, FL rig, aprs messenger, and have not been able to find any reason why this radio would not be less than magnificent, for digital mode Communications on HF. This really makes me speculate about ARRLs “thumbs down” of this radio. what I’ve seen so far, this radio has a magnificent receiver, excellent filtering, and comes in a form factor much smaller than the Icom 7300 or 7200, making it a viable field radio. I hate to ssy it guys, but this radio is truly amazing! 73 Julian oh8stn”

Amateur Radio Emergency Service Transitioning to New Online Reporting System

The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) will phase out the traditional ARES report forms later this year in favor of an online system called ARES Connect, a volunteer management, communications, and reporting system. The new system will allow information to be logged by ARES members and managed through the Field Organization. The advent of ARES Connect was among other highlights in “The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) 2017 Annual Report,” released this week.

ARES Connect is a volunteer management system that covers event signup, reporting, and roster management,” ARRL Emergency Preparedness Manager Mike Corey, KI1U, said. “It does not change how ARES operates when serving a partner entity; it is simply a system that will make managing volunteers and events easier.” Beta testing of ARES Connect will begin in March. ARES made changes to its report forms last year to make it easier to process information at ARRL Headquarters and to standardize the format for all forms. ARES Monthly Reports have been posted to the ARRL website, providing regular information on Amateur Radio public service communication activity, the report noted.

According to the 2017 report, ARES membership stands at 31,332, up by nearly 13% from 2016. The number of emergency operations events reported was up by 665 from the previous year, with 1,913 reported in 2017. The top three states in terms of ARES membership in 2017 were California (2,265), Texas (1,930), and Ohio (1,858).

Reported ARES events amounted to 51,673 in 2017 — a 4% increase — accounting for 718,930 volunteer hours at a calculated value of more than $17.3 million.

“There was a noticeable increase in reported activity during August through November,” the ARES 2017 Annual Report said. “During this period there was Amateur Radio response activity for hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria; wildfires in the western states, and the total solar eclipse that occurred on August 21.”

According to the report, 26 states gained ARES members, while 13 lost members.

How to Build your own DMR Digital Radio Code Plug – Ham Radio Q&A

“A DMR radio isn’t any good if it doesn’t have any frequencies or channels programmed into it. Programming your first DMR radio might feel a little bit daunting. It’s certainly different than programming an analog radio. So in part 2 in my series on DMR, we’re going to walk through the process of programming, or building a codeplug, for the Retevis RT82. But this content isn’t just limited to the Retevis, the process is similar for almost all of the Chinese DMR radios, so this information is also good for the other brands.”

CHA EMCOMM III Base – 3.5-30 MHz

The EMCOMM III Base antenna, is an effective multi-band High Frequency (HF) antenna specially designed for short to long range base station HF communications. Due to configuration and installation flexibility and low visibility design, it is ideal for home use even in developments with a Home Owners Association (HOA) and Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (CCRs). It is also highly suitable for military, government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Military Affiliate Radio System (MARS), Civil Air Patrol (CAP), Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) / Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES), Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN), and shortwave listening.

The EMCOMM III Base antenna is configurable to facilitate both long distance (DX) and Near-Vertical Incident Sky wave (NVIS) communication and using an automatic antenna tuner or coupler with memory settings will support most Automatic Link Establishment (ALE), frequency-hopping, and spread- spectrum modes and operations.

SWR: Subject to frequency and configuration, but typically less than 2.7:1. An antenna tuner or coupler may be required depending upon frequency and configuration.

The EMCOMM III Base antenna can be installed by the operator in less than 30 minutes. It should be installed as high and straight as possible, but almost any available supports, such as an existing antenna tower, trees, a flag pole, the eaves of a house, or a non-conductive fence can be used with satisfactory results.

The EMCOMM III Base antenna is comprised of a matching transformer and a 130 foot antenna wire on a line winder – making an effective HF base station antenna system for permanent installation as a primary or backup HF base station antenna.

Specifications:

Frequency: 10M – 80M

Power: 500W SSB or 250W CW

Length: 130’ Copper Clad KEVLAR PTFE (Teflon) (-70°C to 150°C) wire

Weight: 2.2 Lb.

The antenna system consists of:

1 X CHA EMCOMM III matching box

1 X 130′ Copper Clad KEVLAR Wire

Sloper Installation

The sloper is considered the most unusual antenna system and can be difficult to get to work properly. The sloper may exhibit some gain in one direction, but usually has omni direction pattern. There are two types of sloper, the full sloper, really a dipole mounted with one end higher than the other. The half-sloper (EMCOMM III BASE) is fed at one end with a “ground system” or counter poise provided by either physical ground if fed at lower end of sloper. If the sloper is fed at the top, then other factors provide the “ground”. In most cases, a sloper mounted on a tower, then the tower and importantly, the beam mounted on top, act as the counterpoise.

One successful version of the sloper (most folks call any kind of sloper simply a “sloper” regardless of its type) is one that is fed with coax. The antenna is fed from the top and installed on a tower with a beam on top. The center conductor of the coax feeds the sloper wire and the shield is carefully bonded to the tower structure. In addition the beam, rotor, and mast are electrically bonded to the tower (here a heavy braided strap connecting the mast to the tower is recommended). The theory is that the sloper is fed at the top and the high current point is high just under the beam, leading away from the tower.

The sloper has been reported to be hard to get to work in some cases. When it works, its performance when used with a tower and a beam is very good. Considering the cost of materials (assuming the tower is in place already) the sloper should be considered.

Inverted “L” Installation

This is most likely the least expensive high performance antenna you can erect for 40M, 80M and 160M (limited performance). It is worth investigating since it needs only one high point in the relative clear to be effective (the horizontal far end can be at a lesser elevation, details later).

Most likely you will need to use an external antenna tuner.

The main radiating component of the “L” is the vertical wire, that’s what makes it a very good groundwave and DX antenna. So it would be good if this can be kept in the clear, or several feet away from your tower, and of course, as high as you can make it. The horizontal part may slope downward, or bent several times to accommodate any obstacles. Keep in mind, the more you bend the element back on itself, the more of the radiated signal is canceled out.

Sometimes it is not possible to have the vertical section longer than the horizontal section. This will result in more of the signal being radiated skyward to which NVIS (Near Vertical Incident Skywave) will occur. NVIS is a propagation method that provides usable signals in the range between ground wave and skywave distances (usually 30 to 400 miles).

Before we go any further, this antenna requires a robust ground system. If your ground is poor, the antenna efficiency will be poor, and you will be troubled with RF in the shack.

The radiation pattern is omni directional, with a possible minor lobe in the direction of the horizontal portion.

Valentine’s Day Aurora & A Bright Region Says Goodbye: Solar Storm Forecast 02-15-18

“We await the arrival of the Valentine’s Day solar storm, which will be followed by some fast solar wind just behind it. This means we should enjoy some extended storm conditions over the next few days with a chance for aurora down to mid-latitudes! Meanwhile region 2699 continues to boost the solar flux for amateur radio operators, but this will only last for a few more days until the region rotates onto the Sun’s backside and out of Earth view. Learn the what kind of storm conditions to expect, when radio propagation for amateur radio and emergency responders will worsen, and why it can be hard to predict the arrival of some solar storms!”

Ham Radio “a Special Hobby,” Young ARRL Member Tells College Publication

A rising star in the Amateur Radio world —19-year old Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, of Lawrenceville, Georgia — has caught the eye of her school, Kettering University in Michigan, where she is majoring in mechanical engineering and engineering physics. Willet already has attracted attention through her ham radio activities. Last spring, she was the keynote speaker at the 32nd annual DX Dinner® held in conjunction with Hamvention®, where her topic was “Experiencing the Hobby of a Lifetime.” The previous summer she was a member of the 2016 Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure (YDXA), which operated from the island of Saba that year. Last year, she won the QST Cover Plaque Award for the article she wrote about her YDXA experience. At the 30th Hamvention Youth Forum in 2017, Willet spoke on “Plugging into Your Valuable Club Resources.” She is the recipient of the ARRL Rocky Mountain Division Scholarship.

Kettering University News took notice of Willet in a February 12 article, “Kettering University Student Brings Ham Radio Hobby, Expertise to Campus,” by Sarah Schuch. The article explains how an early fascination with Morse code led Willet into ham radio and inspired her to obtain her license in 2015. She now holds an Amateur Extra-class license.

“I would encourage people to consider exploring Amateur Radio, because it’s a hobby that allows you to explore anything from technical electronics to international friendships,” Willet is quoted in the article. “It’s such a special hobby because there’s so many people that want to get to know you and want to help you learn and grow. It really has enabled me to mature into who I am today.”

Set to graduate in 2021, Willet said her ham radio experiences have taught her a lot, some of which she is able to apply to her studies, and vice versa. She hopes to start an Amateur Radio club on campus this spring to get more students interested. In the article, Willet also pointed to Amateur Radio’s public service role, citing the devastating 2017 hurricanes, where ham radio sometimes was the only available communication resource.

Ruth Willet and her mom Sharon, KM4TVU, participated in ARRL’s highly successful National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) event in 2016, which also was mentioned in the Kettering article.

“It’s a stress relief for me,” Willet said in the article. “I really enjoy sharing this hobby with other students.”

ARRL Receives Byrd Antarctic Expedition Morse Key, Historical Materials

ARRL has received from Lynn Burlingame, N7CFO, the donation of a Kilbourne & Clark Morse key that the late Howard Mason (1ID, 7BU, and K7QB) used to let the world know that Rear Admiral Richard Byrd and his crew had overflown the South Pole for the first time during Byrd’s 1928 – 1930 Antarctic expedition. Mason and his 80 colleagues were awarded Congressional Gold Medals for their efforts in establishing the Antarctic outpost “Little America,” the first of a series of bases bearing that name.

Mason was a lifelong radio amateur from Seattle who was an active ARRL National Traffic System participant and manager. In 1923, he relocated to Connecticut to serve as an editor of the ARRL’s journal, QST. Mason’s first polar experience was as a radio operator with the Wilkins-Detroit News Arctic expedition that traversed the North Pole by air in 1928. This led to his selection by Byrd to be a radio engineer with his first Antarctic expedition. Mason was co-operator of Little America’s base radio station, WFA, used to keep in contact with the rest of the world.

Mason continued to use the key in his ensuing and varied endeavors. Prior to his death in 1996, he gave the key to Burlingame of Bellevue,

Washington, a collector and biographer who generously donated it to the ARRL Heritage Museum. The museum plans to display the key as part of an exhibition tentatively scheduled to open on April 15. The exhibition also will include a large wooden key, engraved with “WFA” and bearing the signatures of some expedition members.

Also on display will be a first edition of Admiral Byrd’s book Little America: Aerial Exploration in the Antarctic, the Flight to the South Pole and an album of contemporary newspaper clippings, both part of the Burlingame donation. A complete narrative will be posted to the Heritage Museum Section of the ARRL website.

The key and the Little America radio operators can be seen in action in an original film available on YouTube, which offers a first look of the towers erected there (at the 15:00 mark). — Thanks to Michael Marinaro, WN1M, ARRL Volunteer Staff Historian/Archivist

ARRL Announces 2018 Teachers Institutes on Wireless Technology Sessions

As part of its educational outreach through the Education & Technology Program (ETP), ARRL will offer three sessions of the Teachers Institute on Wireless Technology this July. The week-long workshops will be held at ARRL Headquarters in Newington, Connecticut, and in Dayton, Ohio — hosted by the Dayton Amateur Radio Association (DARA). The Teachers Institute (TI) is an expenses-paid, professional development seminar that provides teachers at all grade levels with tools and strategies to introduce basic electronics, radio science, space technology, and satellite communication, as well as weather science, introduction to micro-controllers, and basic robotics in their classrooms.

The Teachers Institute curriculum is designed for motivated teachers and other school staff who want to learn more about wireless technology and bring that knowledge to their students. The goal of the TI program is to equip educators with necessary foundational knowledge and — through hands-on learning — generate the inspiration for teachers to continue exploring wireless technology and adapt what they learn to their classroom curricula.

Interested educators can apply online. The $100 enrollment fee is refunded for applicants who are not selected. A qualified applicant must be an active teacher at an elementary, middle, high school, or community college/university, or in a leadership or enrichment instruction role in an after-school program.

Summer 2018 Teachers Institute Schedule

Session Location Dates Instructor TI – 2 Newington, Connecticut (ARRL) July 9 – July 12

  Matt Severin, N8MS TI – 1 Dayton, Ohio July 16 – July 20

  Larry Kendall, K6NDL TI – 1 Newington, Connecticut (ARRL) July 23 – July 27

  Tommy Gober, N5DUX

Topics covered in the TI-1 “Introduction to Wireless Technology” workshop include basic electronics, radio science, microcontroller programming, and basic robotics. Among other activities, participants will learn how to solder and practice by building a small project. They’ll also learn basic circuit concepts and learn how to use basic test equipment. In addition, TI-1 attendees will learn about Amateur Radio, take part in a hidden transmitter hunt, see demonstrations of Amateur Radio satellite communication, and build and program their own simple robots.

The TI-2 “Remote Sensing and Data Gathering” workshop will concentrate on analog-to-digital conversion and data sampling. Participants will receive telemetry from Amateur Radio satellites and apply it to math and science topics. TI-2 participants will also construct a marine research buoy equipped with environmental sensors, build a microcontroller to sample the data, configure it for Automatic Packet Reporting System (APRS) transmission, and receive and upload data to a spreadsheet for analysis.

Holding an Amateur Radio license is not required for the “Introduction to Wireless Technology” workshop (TI-1), but one is required by those planning to attend the advanced “Remote Sensing and Data Gathering” workshop (TI-2), and applicants to the advanced workshop must have completed TI-1.

The grant to attend a TI covers transportation, hotel, and a modest per diem allowance to cover meals, instructional resources, and a resource library of relevant ARRL publications.

Graduate credit is available through Fresno Pacific University, which may be applied to satisfy professional growth requirements to maintain teaching credentials. The class is self-contained, and participants are expected to be able to complete all requirements during the class time. Graduate credit forms may be requested at the end of the Teachers Institute.

Ducie Island 2018 DXpedition Plans Coming Together for this Fall

The Perseverance DX Group (PDXG) reports that its plans to activate the protected marine area of Ducie Island from October 20 to November 3, 2018 are starting to jell. The last Ducie Island DXpedition was VP6DX in 2008. Ducie is currently the 21st most-wanted DXCC entity according to Club Log. The 2018 DXpedition would operate as VP6D. A team of 15 operators will be on the island for up to 14 days, departing from Mangareva, French Polynesia, aboard the expedition ship Braveheart. Seven operating positions are planned for 160 to 10 meters, SSB/CW/digital, including FT8. VP6D has added 6-meter Earth-moon-Earth to the mix and hopes to make the first ever 6-meter moonbounce contacts from Ducie Island.

“The logistics plan is coming together,” the team announced on February 8. “Our equipment will be consolidated in Fremont, California, for testing, packaging, and shipment to the Braveheart in New Zealand.”

The team reported that its antenna plans are coming together, with 2-element vertical dipole arrays on the high bands backed up by a couple of horizontal beams; 4-squares on 30 and 40 meters, and verticals on 80 and 160. Top Band receive antennas are still under development.

A grant from the Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF) as well as contributions from other DX organizations, are helping to fund the adventure’s clubs and foundations.

It’s believed that this would be the fourth DXpedition to Ducie Island. An uninhabited atoll, Ducie Island is a British Overseas Territory in the Pitcairn Islands in the South Pacific

Direct questions to Team Ducie.

Radio Amateur Named as Next President of Harvard University

Lawrence S. Bacow, KA1FZQ, of Brookline, Massachusetts, has been selected to become the 29th president of Harvard University, the home of W1AF. Selected from among a field of some 700 candidates, Bacow will take office on July 1, succeeding Drew Faust.

“Larry Bacow is one of the most accomplished, admired, insightful, and effective leaders in American higher education,” said William F. Lee, chair of the Presidential Search Committee, in making the announcement over the weekend. “This is a pivotal moment for higher education — a time full of extraordinary possibilities to pursue new knowledge, enhance education, and serve society, but also a time when the singular value of higher education and university research has too often been challenged and called into doubt. Such a time calls for skillful leadership, strategic thinking, and disciplined execution. Larry will provide just that.”

The son of immigrants and holding three degrees from Harvard, including a PhD in public policy, Bacow was a long-time faculty leader at MIT, his undergraduate alma mater, where he rose to the position of chancellor. He also served for a decade as the President of Tufts University. Currently he is the Hauser Leader-in-Residence at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Public Leadership.

In a Temple Emmanuel From the Gates newsletter commentary last November, Bacow confessed to being an “uber nerd” while he was growing up in Pontiact, Michigan. “I was a ham radio operator. I used to get my kicks building radios out of Heathkits — some of you are old enough to remember them.” Bacow said his reading outside of school was “confined to Popular SciencePopular MechanicsScientific American and some obscure magazines known only to fellow ham radio operators called QST and 73.

ARRL Roanoke Division Vice Director Bill Morine, N2COP, said he once worked Bacow on 2 meters when the academician was sailing off the coast of Maine many years ago, after Bacow had been named the president of Tufts University, Morine’s alma mater. “Larry’s a great guy and is supportive of ham radio,” Morine told ARRL.

Bacow’s father Mitchell also was a radio amateur — W8JYZ and N4MB. He died in 2007. — Thanks to Harvard University and to Bill Morine, N2COP
