Launched announced for Es’hail-2 carrying ham radio transponders

fre, 03/08/2018 - 22:53

Es’hailSat has tweeted their geostationary satellite Es’hail-2 is expected to be launched by SpaceX in the 4th quarter of 2018.

Qatar’s Es’hail-2 satellite will provide the first amateur radio geostationary communications and is capable of linking amateurs from Brazil to Thailand.

Es’hail-2 will carry two “Phase 4” amateur radio transponders operating in the 2400 MHz and 10450 MHz bands. A 250 kHz bandwidth linear transponder intended for conventional analogue operations and an 8 MHz bandwidth transponder for experimental digital modulation schemes and DVB amateur television.

On August 2 the company tweeted the launch information in response to a question about the launch date from Eric Ralph https://twitter.com/eshailsat/status/1024898547165093890

On July 31, 2018 Michael Baylor @nextspaceflight tweeted:
A new #SpaceX Falcon 9 arriving at the Cape. The most likely scenario is that it is B1050.1 for the Es’hail mission. @13ericralph31 is reporting that B1046.2 will launch Merah Putih, making B1049.1 the most likely choice for Telstar 18V.

ARISS Packet Radio System Expected to be Back Late this Year

fre, 03/08/2018 - 17:12

The currently silent packet radio system on the International Space Station could be back on the air by year’s end.

Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) hardware team members have located an original duplicate of the packet module that had been in use on the International Space Station (ISS) before failing more than a year ago after 17 years of service. With a new battery installed, the unit was tested and found to be functioning. The ARISS packet system in the space station’s Columbus module, operating on 145.825 MHz, quit last July after first experiencing some problems. All necessary paperwork has been completed to manifest the packet module on the Progress 71P spacecraft launch now set for Halloween, with docking on November 2.

“Installation date will depend on the crew’s busy schedule, but ARISS hopes packet can be online again by the end of November 2018,” ARISS said this week in a news release. ARISS said it’s heard from “many hams” who have been asking when the packet system will be back on the air.

When the ARISS packet module aboard ISS died in last year, the ARISS hardware team already was overburdened with the design and safety certification of the new interoperable radio system ARISS has been developing that’s set for launch next year. The team did attempt some basic troubleshooting of the old packet module but was unable to revive it and decided instead to dedicate all of its time to the new replacement radio system, including packet capability.

Early this year, thermal testing of the first flight-identical power supply for the new comprehensive radio system showed that some changes to air flow were needed. This change would delay launch of the new radio equipment from late 2018 to early 2019.

To contribute to the ARISS radio fund, visit the ARISS website and click on the “Donate” button.

VHF/UHF and Above Contests Just Ahead!

fre, 03/08/2018 - 02:39

The new 222 MHz & Up Distance Contest, the 10 GHz & Up, and the ARRL September VHF Contest are upon us…or approaching rapidly. Here are some details:

  • 222 MHz & Up Distance Contest: This weekend! The second running of this event runs from 1800 UTC on Saturday, August 4, and concludes at 1759 UTC on Sunday, August 5. If you have gear for 222 MHz or above — even FM — fire it up! Here are the details. The event has several competition categories, including Team and Club Competitions. The Team Competition requires that teams register before the event. There are two sized teams, small (2-5 members) and large (6 to 10 members). Check out the results of the 2017 event.
  • 10 GHz & Up Contest: In just over 2 weeks on August 18-19 the first weekend of the ARRL 10 GHz Contest arrives. The second is September 15-16. Participants may operate for 24 hours on each contest weekend. Each weekend starts at 6 AM local time on Saturday, through 12 midnight local time on Sunday. In recent weeks, the San Bernardino Microwave Society had their tune-up event, and the North East Weak Signal Group had their picnic with microwave range testing, offer members an opportunity for performance tweaking. If you have gear for 10, 24, 47, 74 GHz or higher, these are the weekends to dust them off and have fun. Last year’s results are on the ARRL website.
  • ARRL September VHF Contest: In about 6 weeks, it will be time for the ARRL September VHF Contest. This event begins at 1800 UTC on Saturday, September 8, and runs through 0259 UTC on Monday, September 10. All bands and all modes above 50 MHz are allowed.  See the full results from 2017.

The ARRL Contest Rules page has links to more information on these and other events. Also, see also our new online certificates page, where you can download current or past award certificates for many ARRL contests.

Contact the ARRL Contest Branch for more information.

FCC Cites Baofeng Importer for Illegally Marketing Unauthorized RF Devices

tor, 02/08/2018 - 19:15

The FCC has issued a Citation and Order (Citation) to Amcrest Industries, LLC(formerly Foscam Digital Technologies, LLC), an importer and marketer of popular and inexpensive Baofeng hand-held transceivers, alleging that the company violated FCC rules and the Communications Act by illegally marketing unauthorized RF devices. The FCC asserts that Amcrest marketed Baofeng model UV-5R-series FM hand-held radios capable of transmitting on “restricted frequencies.” The Baofeng models UV-5R and UV-5R V2+ were granted an FCC equipment authorization in 2012 to operate under Part 90 Private Land Mobile Radio Service (Land Mobile) rules.

“Under § 2.803 of the Commission’s rules, an entity may not market a device that is capable of operating outside the scope of its equipment authorization,” the FCC Citation said. “RF devices that have been authorized under Part 90 rules, such as the model as issue, must operate within the technical parameters established in those rules.” The FCC also maintained that the UV-5R 2+ is capable of operating at 1 W or 4 W, while the Part 90 Equipment Authorization limits the power output to 1.78 W.

Amcrest conceded that the units were capable of operating on restricted frequencies but told the FCC that, per discussions with the manufacturer, were “only capable of operating at 1 W, the FCC said. The company instructed the manufacturer to fix the problem and later confirmed with the manufacturer that all Amcrest inventory on order and in the future would operate only on 145 – 155 MHz and 400 – 520 MHz.

While the Citation does not mention Amateur Radio, the UV-5R series radios can be programmed in a channelized configuration to function on 2-meters and 70-centimeters. According to the Citation, Amcrest had added a warning in its user manuals and marketing and sales materials implying that the UV-5R V2+ could operate on unauthorized and restricted frequencies, including Part 87 Aviation Services frequencies, Part 80 Maritime Services frequencies, and frequencies reserved for federal government use. The FCC said Part 90 radios that permit the operator to use external controls to program and transmit on frequencies other than those programmed by the manufacturer are “generally prohibited.”

Amcrest told the FCC that it had ceased marketing four models in the Baofeng UV-5R series “a few years ago,” but it did not remove them from its website until last February. Numerous online retailers continue selling UV-5R series radios for less than $25, with some ads indicating that these are “ham” equipment.

Amcrest Industries, LLC, which owns and operates Baofengradio US, is an import, distribution, and marketing company based in Houston, Texas. It also sells hand-held transceivers under its own label.

“While we recognize Amcrest’s efforts to date to achieve compliance with the Commission’s rules, the company must nonetheless ensure the version of the UV-5R V2+ it is marketing operates only on frequencies specified in its Equipment Authorization,” the FCC said in its Citation. The FCC directed Amcrest “to take immediate steps to come into compliance with the Commission’s equipment authorization rules and cease marketing unauthorized RF devices in the United States.” Amcrest could face fines of nearly $20,000 per day if it fails to comply.

Performance Test of MFJ-1846 Six-Band Hex-Beam Antenna

tor, 02/08/2018 - 17:17

“Performance results of MFJ-1846 Six-band hex-beam antenna. The antenna shows great directionality and ample gain. The SWR doesn’t quite cover the 20 meter, 10 meter, or 6 meter band, but does cover 17, 15, and 12 meters. I also look at the Hy-gain AR-500 antenna rotator. On the air performance on 20 meters was spectacular.”

MFJ-1846 Hex Beam

New Hex Beam from MFJ delivers solid gain and directivity on 20,17,15,12,10, and 6 Meters in a low-profile package that will have your pocketbook and your neighbors smiling!

When it comes to lightweight directional HF antennas, the MFJ-1846 Hex Beam tops the list for its low-profile footprint, solid construction, and DX-snagging design — all for a truly affordable price. The MFJ-1846 uses an updated G3TXQ element configuration for improved bandwidth, superior front-to-back performance, and low SWR. However, that`s just the beginning! MFJ takes the Hex Beam`s unique balanced-tension framework to a new level with rugged mounting hardware, exceptionally durable spreaders, and sliding antenna-wire guides — all designed to ensure years of reliable service in tough 21st-century weather conditions.

Here are just a few of the MFJ-1846`s outstanding features:

[ ] Light weight — mounts on a tripod, gable mount, or even chimney straps.
[ ] Proven directivity and gain from a time-tested design.
[ ] No touchy setup, 100% plug-n-play.
[ ] Rotates with an inexpensive rotor — only 3.5 square-feet of wind loading.
[ ] Handles maximum legal power, all modes, all six bands.
[ ] Delivers full-band coverage without a tuner.
[ ] Great for contesting, QSY instantly between all six bands.
[ ] Just one coax feed, a real cost saver!
[ ] Sky-gray spreaders disappear against most backdrops.
[ ] Small footprint — 11-foot turning radius fits cramped spaces.
[ ] Symmetrical footprint — stays balanced when coated with ice and snow.

Great Value: Gain and directivity make all the difference when hunting DX or maintaining schedules, and the Hex Beam has a long history of delivering satisfying results where antenna options are limited. However, it`s no secret that these antennas are expensive for small companies to manufacture, a reality often reflected in the price! That`s where MFJ`s massive purchasing power and extensive manufacturing capability kick in to your advantage. It`s a matter of simple arithmetic, you`ll get more antenna for less money when you order the MFJ-1846!

Specifications:
Gain 5.3 dBi in free space (more over ground)
Front-to-Back Ratio 15 – 20 dB typical
Turning Radius 11 feet
Maximum Mast Size: 2-1/16″ OD
Weight: 25 pounds
Wind Loading Surface: 3.5 square feet

Price: 499.95 (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Digital Modes Significant changes in store for FT8 and MSK144 with WSJT-X Version 2.0 Significant changes in store for FT8 and MSK144 with WSJT-X Version 2.0 July 30, 2018 No comments

ARRL 2017 Annual Report Focuses on Hurricane Response

tor, 02/08/2018 - 14:04

The ARRL 2017 Annual Report, which highlights the organization’s efforts and activities throughout 2017, is now available. Starting with the cover photo, Amateur Radio’s response to the Atlantic hurricane season figures prominently in the report. Amateur Radio has repeatedly been the only means of communication into or out of an area affected by a natural disaster. Puerto Rico was especially hard hit by Hurricane Maria, and the cover depicts an October 4 message from the Mayor Carlos Mendez of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, calling for an Amateur Radio operator to support communication between his town and the capital city of San Juan.

In his message to ARRL members, President Rick Roderick, K5UR, suggested that a paradigm shift is under way within Amateur Radio.

“The wants and needs of the new generation hams are very different from those of ‘traditional’ hams — of which I consider myself one,” Roderick wrote. “[W]e’ve got to embrace and meet the challenges of new technological developments and the operating trends of the next generation. It’s a different landscape than when I started. ARRL is there to support and promote these new things as outlined in our mission statement — to advance the art, science, and enjoyment of Amateur Radio — and to fight for our spectrum allocations, but the organization does not ‘own’ Amateur Radio. That ownership rests with hams.” Roderick said seeds for change planted in 2017 are starting to sprout, as ARRL also adapts to a changing Amateur Radio environment.

In his report, CEO Barry Shelley, N1VXY, looked back on what he called “a remarkable year” for ARRL — one that first and foremost was defined by change.

“Much of the change could be considered internal to the organization, and not always visible. But the changes that occurred helped create new ways to face and deal with some of the challenges presented throughout the year.”

Shelley said ARRL faced a series of continuing challenges during 2017, but said those challenges “presented opportunities for the organization to show how we can respond and show people, in a very public way, the capabilities of the Amateur Radio Service. One of the biggest challenges we faced in 2017 — and one of the most public — was the response to the devastating hurricanes in the Caribbean and southeastern part of the United States.”

The Emergency Preparedness Department reported an upward trend in Amateur Radio Emergency Service activity. “An increase in reported activity was noted during the months of August through November, due to Amateur Radio response activity for hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria; wildfires in the western US, and the total solar eclipse that occurred on August 21,” the report recounted. The narrative tells how additional Ham Aid program equipment was on its way to Puerto Rico by September 9 in response to Hurricane Irma. After Hurricane Maria, more Ham Aid packages were dispatched to Puerto Rico with 22 Red Cross/ARRL volunteers.

“During the 2017 hurricane season, particularly after the damage hurricane Maria caused in Puerto Rico, ARRL experienced a significant increase in awareness of Amateur Radio and the service that ham radio operators can offer in times of emergency,” the report noted.

The ARRL VEC Department summary pointed out, “Interest in Amateur Radio took an upturn in the second half of the year, due to a heightened awareness of Amateur Radio’s potential role during natural disasters.”

Other highlights:

  • Amateur Radio gained two new bands in 2017, due in significant part to ARRL’s efforts to convince the FCC to allow amateur access to parts of the spectrum below the Standard Broadcast Band.
  • QST redesign developed during 2017, rolling out with the January 2018 issue which was met with widespread praise. “Keep talking to us,” Ford implored members in an editorial about the redesign. “We’ll keep listening, and making changes as needed.”
  • A generous donation from Dr. Ed Snyder, W1YSM, of Wallingford, Connecticut, has endowed a fund to support the ARRL Collegiate Amateur Radio Initiative (CARI).
  • From a financial perspective, 2017 was a good year for ARRL. Overall revenues were up and expenses were down, resulting in ARRL producing a $1.4 million gain from operations.
  • The Annual Report includes a comprehensive auditor’s report and financial statements.

Bryant Rascoll, KG5HVO, is 2018 Newsline Young Ham of the Year

ons, 01/08/2018 - 21:55

Fourteen-year-old ARRL member Bryant Rascoll, KG5HVO, of Montgomery, Alabama, has been selected as the 2018 Bill Pasternak WA6ITF Memorial Amateur Radio Newsline Young Ham of the Year (YHOTY). The son of Tim and Lauren (KG5TQO) Rascoll, Bryant was the youngest participant in the recent World Radiosport Team Championship 2018 (WRTC 2018) in Germany.

Bryant says he became enthusiastic about Amateur Radio after joining the Boy Scouts and taking the Radio Merit Badge. Listening to a counselor’s contact with a station in the Netherlands during an ARRL DX contest fueled his desire to become a radio amateur. First licensed as a Technician in 2015, he had upgraded to Amateur Extra-class by late 2017.

He credits his many mentors in the Jefferson Amateur Radio Club (W5GAD) during his time in Louisiana for exposing him to several aspects of Amateur Radio, including contesting, CW, Field Day, special event stations, public service events, hamfests, and conventions. He was the club’s 2016 Member of the Year.

Also a member of the Montgomery Amateur Radio Club, Bryant was a part of the Dave Kalter Youth DX Adventure (YDXA) team in 2017, which operated from Costa Rica.

At WRTC 2018, where he paired up with Mathias Acevedo Von Frey, CE2LR, of Chile, Bryant was the only youth competitor from North America. A recent issue of NCJ highlighted his accomplishments and identified him as one in the next generation of contesters. He is a member of the CW Operators’ Club (CWOps) and an honorary member of the Georgia Contesting Group. Individually, he placed first in the Low-Power Rookie category in North America in the 2017 CQ WPX SSB contest and firstplace in the Louisiana Section in the Single-Operator, Low-Power Unlimited category in the ARRL 2017 International DX CW and SSB contests.

Bryant was recently appointed as ARRL Alabama Section Youth Coordinator. Homeschooled by his mother, he has written articles for Solid Copy, the CW Operators Club newsletter, and the K9YA Telegraph online magazine.

He’s a Star Scout in Troop 307 in the Tukabatchee Council in Montgomery, Alabama, and is on the trail to earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Last October, he staffed the Montgomery Amateur Radio Club’s Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) CW station. He earned a first place award and the People’s Choice Award for the Classical Conversations Montgomery Science Fair this past February for his project, “Antenna Height Effectiveness.” He earned a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Achievement on the 2018 National Latin Exam.

Bryant’s honors extend to sports. He is a member of the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame and has played baseball for 8 years. His team, the NOLA Predators, competed at Cooperstown. He is currently a member of the Triton Rays in Montgomery, a competitive traveling team. Bryant was a speaker at the Hamvention 2018 Youth Forum moderated by Carole Perry, WB2MGP.

He will be recognized as the 2018 YHOTY during the Huntsville Hamfest on August 18 in Huntsville. The Young Ham of the Year Award was inaugurated by William Pasternak, WA6ITF (SK), in 1986. — Thanks to Amateur Radio Newsline

QST Antenna Design Competition Submission Deadline Looms

ons, 01/08/2018 - 13:51

The deadline to submit a design for the 2018 QST Antenna Design Competition is just ahead — September 1! The competition challenge is to design the best LF, MF, or HF antenna for limited-space applications. ARRL can only accept one entry per person (or team), but there’s not much time left to complete building and testing of your design. Full details appeared in the June 2018 issue of QST. Three cash prizes are on the line: First place is $600, second place is $250, and third place is $150. Even designs that don’t win a prize might still be eligible for future QSTpublication.

Antennas must be designed for one or more bands between 2200 meters and 10 meters, must fit within a 30 × 50 foot area, and stand no taller than 30 feet at any point.

All submissions must include…

·         drawings with dimensions (hand drawings are okay), a list of materials, and photos.

·         a description and summary of any measurements taken, including modeling and files (modeling is not a requirement).

·         a discussion of observed on-the-air results and any comparisons with other antennas.

·         the entry category, submitter’s name, mailing address, and email address.

All antennas based on submitted designs must be the sole creations of the entrants and not available for sale. Winners will be chosen based ingenuity of design, mechanical and electrical safety, expected performance, and durability. The judges’ decisions are final.

Entrants must be ARRL members. ARRL staffers and QST advertisers are not eligible.

Mail entries to QST, ATTN: Antenna Design Competition, 225 Main St., Newington, CT 06111 or email your entry, including call sign, with the subject line of “2018 Antenna Design Competition.” If submitting more than 6 MB of material, use separate email messages. Do not send compressed ZIP files, as these will be rejected.

Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, is 2018 Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award Recipient

tir, 31/07/2018 - 23:01

Nineteen-year-old Ruth Willet, KM4LAO, of Cana, Virginia, was named as the recipient of the 2018 ARRL Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award by the ARRL Board of Directors at its July 20 – 21 meeting. The Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award is given annually by the Board to a radio amateur under the age of 21 whose accomplishments and contributions to both Amateur Radio and the local community are of an exemplary nature.

Willet, who earned her Technician class license in June 2015 and upgraded to Extra in May 2016, was instrumental in re-establishing the Amateur Radio and Electronics Club (K8HPS) at Kettering University in Michigan, where she is a junior pursuing a double major in engineering physics and mechanical engineering while maintaining an A average. She alternates 11-week academic terms with 11-week co-op jobs at Textron Specialized Vehicles in Augusta, Georgia. Willet recently relocated to Virginia from Lawrenceville, Georgia, where she grew up.

Willet is actively involved in recruiting and mentoring new licensees and in community awareness programs, including demonstrations during the August 21, 2017, total solar eclipse. She is on the air daily on HF, using SSB or CW and satellites. In addition to her membership in ARRL, Willet belongs to AMSAT and CWOps, as well as several other clubs. She enjoys HF contesting, participating in local club events, and chasing and roving to grids on Amateur Radio satellites. Willet and her mom Sharon, KM4TVU, participated in ARRL’s highly successful National Parks on the Air (NPOTA) event in 2016.

Willet has written articles for numerous amateur radio news outlets, including QST. She earned the 2017 ARRL August QST Cover plaque for her article “The 2016 Youth DX Adventure to the Caribbean Island of Saba.” The article was based on her experience as a participant in the 2016 Dave Kalter Memorial Youth DX Adventure trip to Saba.

In May, Willet was presented with the Radio Club of America’s Young Achiever Award. Last spring, she was the keynote speaker at the 32nd annual SWODXA DX Dinner, held in conjunction with Hamvention®, where her topic was “Experiencing the Hobby of a Lifetime.” She also spoke at the 30th Hamvention Youth Forum in 2017 on “Plugging into Your Valuable Club Resources.”

The Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Award, which includes a cash award of $1,500 and an engraved plaque to the recipient, is intended to provide a tangible reward to those deserving young amateurs who contribute their time, skills, and energies daily through their commitment to Amateur Radio. As models for their peers, and inspirations to us all, these fine young people are highly visible boosters of Amateur Radio awareness. — Thanks to ARRL Communications Manager Dave Isgur, N1RSN

Johnson Space Center Amateur Radio Club Fires Up 1950s Vintage Gear for NASA on the Air Special Event

man, 30/07/2018 - 21:51

W5RRR, the Johnson Space Center Amateur Radio Club (JSCARC), is on the air as part of the NASA on the Air (NOTA) year-long special event — one of 12 NASA ham club stations participating in the event, which celebrates significant NASA milestones as the agency observes its 60th anniversary.

This week, JSCARC members will focus operations on 80, 40, 20, 15, and 10 meters, as well as on satellites. A commemorative 1958 vintage vacuum tube vintage station will be activated. It pairs a Johnson Ranger transmitter and Courier amplifier with a Hammarlund HQ-145C receiver, courtesy of Kenneth Goodwin, K5RG, a JSARC member.

“This station will be used to make CW, SSB, and AM QSOs,” Keith Brandt, WD9GET, said. “In addition, our other shack radios will use SSB, FT8, FM, CW, and SSTV to make contacts on all bands.”

A special 60th anniversary QSL card — designed by AB5SS — will be available with an SASE for contacts made only to JSC Amateur Radio Club, 2101 NASA Rd. 1 M/C AW7, Houston, TX 77058. A certificate is available for top stations that work modes and bands across the NOTA NASA centers.

ISS SSTV activation July 30-31

man, 30/07/2018 - 19:07

The Russian cosmonauts on the International Space Station are expected to activate amateur radio Slow Scan Television (SSTV) transmissions on 145.800 MHz FM during Monday and Tuesday, July 30-31.

The Inter-MAI-75 SSTV experiment should be active on:
• Monday, July 30 from 16:00-19:30 UT
• Tuesday, July 31 from 13:25-19:15 UT

The SSTV images will be transmitted on 145.800 MHz FM using the Kenwood TM-D710 transceiver located in the Russian ISS Service module. It is expected they will use the PD-120 SSTV format.

Note the ISS transmissions use the 5 kHz deviation FM standard rather than the narrow 2.5 kHz used in Europe. If your transceiver has selectable FM filters try using the wider filter. Handheld transceivers generally have a single wide filter fitted as standard and you should get good results outdoors using just a 1/4 wave whip antenna.

ISS SSTV links for tracking and decoding software
https://amsat-uk.org/beginners/iss-sstv/

You can receive the SSTV transmissions by using an Online Radio (WebSDR) and the MMSSTV software:
• Listen to the ISS when it is in range of London with the SUWS WebSDR http://farnham-sdr.com/
• Listen to the ISS when it is over Russia with the R4UAB WebSDR

Icom PoC Full Duplex Radio System, Nationwide Coverage Over 4G / LTE Mobile Phone Network

man, 30/07/2018 - 17:09

Icom’s new PoC (Push-to-Talk Over Cellular) radio system allows you to communicate with your two-way radio system over a 4G / LTE closed network. Now you can enjoy licence free nationwide coverage for your business without the use of repeaters thus reducing the cost of infrastructure and maintenance cost of a wide area radio network.

Icom’s new PoC radio system provides full duplex nationwide area communication using a 4G/ LTE closed, private network and instantaneous communication with PTT operation. The PoC radio system will fall back to a 3G network if 4G is unavailable. The closed system will operate from a private LTE mobile data network providing an extra level of security. ‘Individual calls’, ‘Group calls’ or ‘All calls’ can be made the same way as a conventional two-way radio.

The PoC radio system has been successfully deployed in Japan. The system has been running for over two years and has a huge amount of users already benefiting from the systems flexibility and ease of use. The network has proven to be extremely reliable and very robust.

The IP501H is the handset/radio that is used in Icom’s PoC solution. The IP501H is a compact and powerful radio filled with many features suitable for business users. The radio handles both simplex and full-duplex communications and, in addition, also conference calls in large groups, much like a two-way radio. IP501H is one of the market’s smallest professional radios measuring only 95 mm high and weighs only 205 grams. The radio is IPX7 waterproof and can handle 1 metre of water depth for 30 minutes.

The IP501H PoC radio is also equipped with an emergency button and emergency related features including Man Down and lone worker functions.

Icom’s new PoC radio system can be used at a business premises but has the flexibility to go out doors at a moment’s notice. This new solution will be ideal for a massive range of business sectors:

• Event companies that continuously move from site to site but don’t have the time to invest in infrastructure but need good quality radio communications, regardless of where they are.
• The security company that covers large areas and does not want to invest in infrastructure.
• Nationwide sales force that needs to be in contact with each other and head office.
• PoC (Push-to-Talk Over Cellular) is a perfect communications platform for a logistics company, providing an incredible range and a simple communication solution at reasonable cost.
• Hotel and conference centres are in many cases large, complex sites which may suffer from dropouts or dead zones with a typical radio system.
• It’s an excellent option for a sports event that covers long distances and need communication. It’s also a great solution if you plan to compete abroad.
• Traditional PMR446 users that want greater flexibility and more range.

The system will be available through the Icom authorised Business Radio dealer network with various monthly contracts available to suit differing customer requirements. Each contract will include a dedicated built-in sim card that covers the three leading UK mobile phone carriers (e.g. EE, Vodafone and O2).

If you are looking for regional or national communication scheme without the hassle or financial commitment of radio infrastructure, then the Icom PoC radio system with its great audio, full duplex communication and excellent health and safety features is your answer.

For more details about Icom’s new PoC radio system visit the dedicated web pages at http://icomuk.co.uk/LTE
