The K7RA Solar Update 12/08/2017

Solar activity declined slightly over the past week, another period which saw multiple days (five) with no sunspots. We will see more of these periods over the next 2-3 years as the sun progresses toward solar minimum.

There was a geomagnetic storm peaking on December 5. In Alaska, the College A index reached 55, and peaked around the middle of the UTC day with K index reaching 7 over two 3-hour readings.

Our reporting week (Thursday through Wednesday) of November 30 through December 6, compared to the previous seven days, we saw average daily sunspot numbers decline from 9.9 to 3.4, and average daily solar flux from 73.5 to 69.6.

Recent consecutive days with zero sunspots were October 8-14, October 16-20, November 1-13, November 19-24, and December 1-5.

You can observe data from periods around the last solar minimum with long consecutive periods of no sunspots at:
ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/indices/old_indices/2007_DSD.txt , ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/indices/old_indices/2008_DSD.txt , ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/indices/old_indices/2009_DSD.txt , and ftp://ftp.swpc.noaa.gov/pub/indices/old_indices/2010_DSD.txt .

Over the past two weeks average planetary A index increased from 6.7 to 11.6 while average mid-latitude A index went from 5 to 8.1.

Predicted solar flux is 68 on December 8-10, 70 on December 11-14, 75 on December 15-16, 74 on December 17, 73 on December 18-20, 74 on December 21-22, then 76, 74, 72, 73 and 72 on December 23-27, 70 on December 28 through January 8, 72 on January 9, 75 on January 10-12, 74 on January 13, 73 on January 14-16, then 74, 74, 76, 74 and 72 on January 17-21.

Predicted planetary A index is 8 on December 8, 5 on December 9-10, 12 on December 11-12, 8 on December 13, 5 on December 14-16, then 8, 25 and 10 on December 17-19, 8 on December 20-21, 5 on December 22-26, 10 and 8 on December 27-28, 5 on December 29-30, then 32, 48, 18, 12 and 8 on December 31 through January 4, 5 on January 5-6, then 12, 15, 12 and 8 on January 7-10, 5 on January 11-12, then 8, 25 and 10 on January 13-15, 8 on January 16-17, and 5 on January 18-21.

F.K. Janda, OK1HH sends us his geomagnetic activity forecast for the period December 8 til January 3, 2017.

“Geomagnetic field will be:
Quiet on December 9, 17, 23-24
Mostly quiet on December 8, 10, 14-16, 22, 25, 30
Quiet to unsettled on December 11, 26, 28
Quiet to active on December 12, 20-21, 27, 29, 31, January 2-3
Active to disturbed on December 13, 18-19, January 1

Amplifications of the solar wind from coronal holes are expected
on December  8 (-11), 17-22, (24-25), 30-31

Remark:
– Parenthesis means lower probability of activity enhancement.”

A new sunspot group (AR2690) emerged on December 6 after a period of no sunspots, but spaceweather.com reports that early on December 7 it is already fading.

This weekend is the ARRL 10 meter contest. There is a good chance for sporadic-e propagation. See http://www.arrl.org/10-meter .

New log periodic array from InnovAntennas with parasitic element enhancement

100MHz to 750MHz Log Periodic Array Description

InnovAntennas design and build Log Periodic Arrays for any bandwidth and for any purpose. Our LPDA’s can be designed and built for your specific needs to ensure the absolute best performance can be acheived.

NEW MODEL FOR 2018!

100-LOG-750 – 100MHz to 750MHz Log Periodic Array (LPDA) is a 50Ω direct fed directional wide band beam antenna for receiving and transmitting purposes. This antenna can be mounted vertically or horizontally and can handle up to 1KW of transmitted power.

As with all InnovAntennas products, only the highest quality materials are used including aerospace grade aluminium and marine grade (A4) stainless steel.

The 100-LOG-750 uses a twin-boom arrangement as a feed line as well as a dipole support. the feedlines are tapered in spacing to remove impedance spikes across its very wide bandwidth which are common in some badly designed LPDA’s. 13mm diameter elements are used to ensure maximum gain and bandwidth is acheived along with Front to Back ratio (F/B) and a specially designed 3 element parasitic element cell has bene placed in the feedline in front of the antenna to enhance top end performance, an area where traditional Log Periodic Arrays fall short.

Often, LPDA’s are designed with a 200Ω feed point which ensures bandwidth. However, this results in the need for a 4:1 transforming balun which both reduces efficiency and limits any input power too. The 100-LOG-750 has been computer optimised to present a 50Ω feed point to allow for direct connection to ocax cable and thus, power limitations are largely removed.

For all your Log Periodic requirements, contact InnovAntennas

100-LOG-750 Specifications:

Typical Gain: 7.5dBi

Peak Gain: 9.7dBi – @ 750MHz

Typical F/B: 20dB+

Input Power (max): 1Kw

Boom Length: 1290mm

Weight: 1.4Kilos

Wind Survival: 150MPH+/250KPH+

Contact us with any questions you may have relating to your specific requirements or frequency ranges you would like to cover.

Good News for Aurora Chasers & Radio Operators: Solar Storm Forecast 12-07-2017

“We are coming down from the fast wind that gave us a minor solar storm, which was weaker than expected so aurora didnt last as long as we hoped. But conditions will only stay quiet for a few days before we get hit with another small pocket of fast wind that could bump us back up to storm conditions and bring another chance for aurora. Amateur radio operators have been suffering through poor conditions due to no active regions in Earth view (except a tiny one, region 2690, that is emerging slowly now). Luckily, in about 4 days a larger, brighter region will return to Earth view, boosting the solar flux and radio propagation. Learn details of the recent and coming solar storms, catch up on aurora pics, and see what else the Sun has in store”

Report from India: Ham Radio Aids Rescue of Two Fishermen

According to a December 6 report in the Deccan Chronicle newspaper in India, members of the Ham Radio and Emergency Communication Society in Idukki assisted in the rescue of two fishermen, identified only as Maniyan and Anil from Veli. They had been stranded in the Indian Ocean for 2 days as a result of Cyclone Ockhi, when a small boat with a VHF radio, in touch with the group’s wide-range Calvary Mount repeater (VU2HEN), sailed into the area.

“We relayed the latitude and longitude to rescue vessels, which reached out to the duo,” said T. R. Manoj, VU2DTH, the Society’s secretary. The Quilon Amateur Radio League (VU2QAR) was said to already be active in helping in communication. Manoj said the hams also were able to communicate with a few lost boats that had managed to find safe harbor during the high seas generated by the cyclone.

Cyclone Ockhi, which struck in early December, was reported to have been the strongest storm of the 2017 North Indian Ocean cyclone season.

Croatia Confirms New 60-Meter Allocation, Expanded 160-Meter Privileges

Photo:9A1A

Croatian radio amateurs now have access to a secondary 60-meter allocation of 5,351.5-5,366.5 kHz, as agreed to at World Radiocommunication Conference 2015, with a maximum 15 W EIRP. For the last several years, the Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM) has issued 1-year licenses to operate on 60 meters.

Hams in Croatia also now have access to more of 160 meters: 1,810-2,000 kHz with a maximum power of 1.5 kW PEP, and 1,850-2,000 kHz with a maximum power of 1 kW PEP. HAKOM published the changes in late November. They became effective on December 2. — Thanks to Zeljko Ulip, 9A2EY, via Paul Gaskell, G4WMO/The 5 MHz Newsletter

Vietnam veteran’s last wish to broadcast on ham radio fulfilled

by Frank Abderholden

For Vietnam veteran John Nugent, who served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, coming home to Newburgh, N.Y., meant some isolation, according to his son Chris, but his love of ham radio allowed him to reach out to other people throughout the world.

“It was tough for him. The radio made him feel comfortable, and helped with his transition,” Chris Nugent said.

The veteran’s call signal, WA2EQJ, came alive again Tuesday at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, where the 75-year-old Nugent got his dying wish to broadcast on ham radio one more time.

“It’s his one true love,” said his son, a renowned chef and owner of Goosefoot in Chicago. “It was above and beyond everything. He built his first radio out of a cigar box when he was 9 years old.”

The elder Nugent moved from Vernon Hills to the Green House veterans’ housing complex at the Lovell Center in December of 2014.

He had been staying on the East Coast until his other son, John Nugent III, died…..READ MORE

OJ9X QRV FROM DEC 6th THRU DEC 31st, 2017

Santa Radio, along with their head figure Santa Claus, are celebrating this December 6th and upcoming Christmas as a very special period for the Republic of Finland, OH-land. We invite you to join the party for the next 25 days. The OJ9X special call sign was released by the Finnish Regulatory Authority for this country-wide operation, which will see several radio clubs participating across all bands and modes. The first 100 scoring the highest number of bands/modes, with the top 10 from each continent, will qualify for the prestigious “Finland 100 Years -Award” signed by Santa himself along with the prime minister of Finland. At the same time the Finnish prime minister, Mr. Juha Sipilä, is a patron of this special event.

Hello from the Offices of Santa Radio — featuring the 2016 Activity

You may recall the great activity of OF9X back during Christmas 2016 when Santa and his twelve elves were penetrating the Christmas scene, and gave you and your children a chance say hello to Santa and find their way into the logbook of Santa’s elves. In fact, you took it so seriously that Santa is hereby presenting you his prestigious award(s).

In total the Santa-team made 33.681 contacts to 17,319 different households in 156 countries.Totally more than 1800 awards were released. It was a success by all accounts, especially since the radio propagation was not good. Almost all North American contacts (2400) were made remotely from the huge OH8X station just a stone’s throw from the Arctic Circle – using the mysterious Polar path. Santa was supported by Veijo, OH6KN; Juha, OH8NC and Kim, OH6KZP.

Overall the number of visitors to Finnish Lapland has risen by 15% by a recent season and in December alone more than 550 flights from outside of Finland arrived at the various Santa Claus airports. The Chinese in particular were arriving in huge numbers, and next season (2017-2018) it is expected that 50.000 Chinese tourists will travel here to experience this Christmas wonderland.

Santa Radio project was organized by a vibrant small team of Santa enthusiasts from the Radio Club of Pusula, OH9W, and technological support was provided by the Radio Arcala labs.

CubicSDR v0.2.0 has been released

CubicSDR is a cross-platform Software-Defined Radio application which allows you to navigate the radio spectrum and demodulate any signals you might discover.  It currently includes several common analog demodulation schemes such as AM and FM and will support digital modes in the future.  Many digital decoding applications are available now that can use the analog outputs to process digital signals by “piping” the data from CubicSDR to another program using software like SoundflowerJack Audio or VBCable.

CubicSDR supports the readily-available RTL-SDR which is an inexpensive SDR device that can be purchased online for about $10 and up.   Search for “RTL2832U” and “820T” or “820T2” on sites such as eBay or Amazon to see what’s available.   Additionally CubicSDR now includes support for SDRPlay, HackRF, BladeRF, AirSpy, NetSDR+, Red Pitaya, Audio Devices (some platform specific at the moment) or any other device with an available SoapySDR support module.

CubicSDR 0.2.0 release builds are now available on the CubicSDR GitHub Releases page: https://github.com/cjcliffe/CubicSDR/releases/tag/0.2.0   The initial manual for CubicSDR 0.2.0 is also available at: http://cubicsdr.readthedocs.io   Version 0.2.0 includes built-in support for:

CS-580 DMR Radio Review and a big announcement

CS-580 DMR Radio

The CS580 is one of our most exciting new products that we have designed in the past 30 years. This DMR radio is designed specifically for the amateur radio operators and offers the best value in the DMR market. The radio includes a number of unique and advanced features and is easy to operate.

Connect to any DMR network without the use of a computer. Experienced Hams who prefer to use a computer can program up to 1,024 fixed channels.

Strong, durable and tough. Meets MIL-STD-810C/D/E/F for humidity, vibration and shock and is dustproof and waterproof to IP54.

Frequency of the repeater can be entered from an easy to use screen on the radio in conjunction with a built in keypad. By pressing a single key, you can enter into monitor mode. You can join a conversation by simply pressing the lock key.

Advanced Hams can enter the frequency, slot number, color code, Tx contact number and type of call from a single easy to use screen. Just press the lock key and you are ready to initiate a call on any DMR network, including the Brandmeister and DMR-MARC.

Find the frequency of local repeaters in a new city by placing the radio into scan mode. Then let the radio automatically find the frequency for you.

In a similar manner, communications on an analog channel is possible without a computer.

EURAO Party – Autumn 2017: FT8, a brand new mode

The European Radio Amateurs’ Organization announces a new party on the air, this time with the motto: “FT8, a brand new mode“. Remember this is not a contest, it is just a radio meeting with a few simple ‘rules’, better to call them recommendations.

Purpose: to spread FT8 (Franke-Taylor design, 8-FSK modulation), a new mode just launched last summer, designed for situations like multi-hop Es where signals may be weak and fading, openings may be short, and you want fast completion of reliable, confirmable QSOs. It is included in WSJT-X Version 1.8.0 program.

Date & time: December 16th and 17th, 2017, Saturday and Sunday, 00:00-24:00 UTC.

Bands & modes: these are the recommended frequencies (+/-) for FT8: 1.840, 3.573, 7.074, 10.136, 14.074, 18.100, 21.074, 24.915, 28.074, 50.313 and 70.100 MHz.

Call: “CQ EURAO Party”.

Exchange: because this is a QSO event, not a contest, you can talk about whatever you want, in any language, and for as long as you like. Here are some topic suggestions to get the conversation going: name, city, locator, weather, antennas, rigs, etc. callsign, locator and signal report, the only data that FT8 allows to exchange.

Also talk about QSL interchange. Tell the truth. Say “no, thanks” if you are not interested in QSL cards. But if you would like to have a memory of your contact, feel free to use our EuroBureauQSL (see below).

Logs: for statistic purposes only, we ask participants to submit their logs in ADIF format to party@eurao.org, where the filename should be your callsign (e.g. EA3RKF.ADI).

There will be no results or league tables, only statistical information about number of QSOs, countries, callsigns, OMs/YLs/Clubs, etc.

Certificate of Participation: for those sending the log and with a minimum of 10% QSOs confirmed.

EuroBureauQSL: you can use it to interchange QSLs even if you are not member. In this case, just send the QSL to the entry point in the country of contacted station.

FCC Seeks Comments on Technological Advisory Council Recommendations

In a Public Notice released on December 1, the FCC’s Office of Engineering and Technology (OET) has invited comments by January 31, 2018, on a wide-ranging series of Technological Advisory Council (TAC) recommendations that, if implemented, could alter the spectrum policy regulatory landscape — especially with respect to interference resolution and enforcement. An advisory body, the TAC’s membership includes several Amateur Radio licensees. ARRL will file comments in the proceeding, ET Docket 17-340.

The TAC has called on the FCC to:

  • Consider adopting the spectrum management principles spelled out in the Council’s Basic Spectrum Principles white papers of March 2014 and December 2015, and set “set clear expectations about the affected system’s capabilities regarding interference, such as harm claim thresholds.”
  • More broadly adopt risk-informed interference assessment and statistical service rules. “In judging whether to allow new radio service rules, the TAC observes that the Commission has to balance the interests of incumbents, new entrants, and the public,” the Public Notice explained. “The process of analyzing the tradeoffs between the benefits of a new service and the risks to incumbents has, to date, been essentially qualitative.”
  • Implement “a next-generation architecture” to resolve interference, and establish a public database of past radio-related enforcement activities. The TAC also recommended that the FCC “incorporate interference hunters in the [interference] resolution process.”

The TAC spelled out a set of three “Interference Realities,” which, in part, assert that harmful interference “is affected by the characteristics of both a transmitting service and a nearby receiving service in frequency, space, or time,” and that radio services should expect occasional service degradation or interruption.”

The TAC also posed three “Responsibilities of [Radio] Services that, in part, state that “receivers are responsible for mitigating interference outside their assigned channels” and that “transmitters are responsible for minimizing the amount of their transmitted energy that appears outside their assigned frequencies and licensed areas.” The TAC acknowledged that the FCC, by and large, does not regulate receiving systems.

Another three principles under “Regulatory Requirements and Actions” the TAC suggested that the FCC may “apply interference limits to quantify rights of protection from harmful interference.” According to the Public Notice, the TAC “has recommended interference limits as a method for the Commission to communicate the limits of protection to which systems are entitled, without mandating receiver performance specifications.” The TAC called for a “quantitative analysis of interactions between services” before the FCC could “make decisions regarding levels of protection,” The OET said.

“[T]he TAC believes the principles can be applied to all systems and result in an optimal solution for each service,” the Public Notice said. The TAC has suggested that the FCC not base its rules on exceptional events and worst-case scenarios but on reality.

“The TAC recommends that the Commission start soon, and start small, and not attempt a major overhaul of its regulatory approach,” the Public Notice said.

W1AW to Start Scheduled Transmissions on 6 Meters Beginning on January 2

ARRL has announced that Maxim Memorial Station W1AW will start scheduled transmissions on 6 meters beginning on January 2. Transmissions on 50.350 MHz will become a part of W1AW’s regular CW code practice, and CW, digital and phone bulletin transmission schedule, starting with the 1400 UTC fast code practice on January 2.

In addition to providing regularly scheduled transmissions on 6 meters, another goal of the W1AW transmission on the Magic Band is to act as a beacon on 6 meters, especially from the Northeast US.

Signal reports will be welcome. A web page will allow listeners to submit signal reports. Listeners also may e-mail their reports to W1AW.

Prior to late 1989, W1AW had a presence on 6 meters for all CW practice and routine bulletins, but it has been silent on 6 meters since then, with the exception of regular visitor operations and contests.

accurately reflect the operations being performed.
– Supported Bands extended. Now all bands from 2200m to 1.25cm are now correctly
logged (previous unsupported bands were logged as 0m but with the correct freq).

Fixes:
– Non LoTW/eQSL Callsigns displayed despite QSL membership filters being set
that should have hidden the Callsign from display.
– For split operations the RX frequency (Dial + RX DF) was not being logged the
TX frequency was being used for the RX value. This fix for WSJT-X only.

Getting Started with Chameleon F-LOOP 2.0 Magloop Antenna

The CHA F-LOOP 2.0 was designed with portability, ease of use simplicity, ruggedness and high performance in mind. Unlike any other similar antennas on the market, the CHA F-LOOP 2.0 is made with premium materials that are precisely manufactured and assembled in the USA!

This is an exciting new product from Chameleon Antenna. Easily deployable HF magnetic loop antennas, also called small transmitting loops, have been routinely used for many years in military, diplomatic, and shipboard HF communication links, where robust and reliable general coverage radio communication is a necessity.

These antennas have only recently become commercially available for amateur radio. The real practical advantage of the small loop, compared to a short vertical whip tuned against earth or a full sized vertical antenna, is the loop’s freedom from dependence on a ground plane and earth for achieving efficient operation; this unique characteristic has profound significance for portable or restricted space antennas.

In comparison, the bottom of a vertically oriented loop does not need to be more than a loop diameter above ground, making it very easy to install in a restricted space location. There is no significant improvement in sky wave propagation performance when a small loop is installed high; all that matters is the loop is substantially clear of objects in the immediate area and oriented towards the desired direction of radiation.

Field trials of the CHA F-LOOP 2.0 demonstrated that an indoor magnetic loop antenna was only around one to two S-units lower, on both transmit and receive, than an outdoor full size quarter wave vertical antenna. Remarkable for an antenna that is only less than three foot in diameter and covers 3.5 MHz to 29.7 MHz (80 – 10 meter ham bands)!

The magnetic loop is different from typical antennas because it emphasizes the magnetic part of the radio wave (H field) rather than the electric part (E field) of the radio wave. It also has a high Q resonance of around 17 KHz on 40 meters, providing immunity from interference outside the bandpass.

The CHA F-LOOP 2.0 Antenna was designed with weight, portability, versatility and cost in mind and is ideal for RV/camping, hotels, apartments, condominiums, homeowner’s associations, deed restrictions and CCRs (Covenants, Conditions & Restrictions), Shortwave Listening (SWL) and other places where it is not feasible to erect a multi-band wire or vertical antenna. We’re sure you will be amazed by the performance and agree that the CHA F-LOOP 2.0 is the most advanced portable magnetic loop antenna available today.

The crimp PL-259 connectors that we’re using with all our RG-58 are UHF-7604L connectors from PAN-PACIFIC. They’re the best and the leader in the industry.

– There is no need for soldering; therefore, installation time is reduced.
– It takes an experienced technician about 15 seconds to install a crimp-crimp connector, thereby greatly reducing the time required to create cable assemblies. This is very important in today’s cabling market where time is of the essence and fewer technicians are being asked to maintain more and more equipment. Digital video, computer and network cabling is almost universally crimped today.
– Crimped connections, done correctly, can be superior to soldered connections.
– A good crimped connection deforms the metal sufficiently past the yield point, but not too much, so that the “spring back” keeps the connection secure, even under thermal cycling (the coefficient of expansion of the two metals might be different) and vibration.
– A good crimp connection is gas tight and won’t wick: it is sometimes referred to as a “cold weld”.
– Like the solder method, it can be used on solid or stranded conductors, and provides a good mechanical and electrical connection.

Specifications:

  • 3.5 MHz to 29.7 MHz (80 – 10 meter ham bands)
  • Power handling: 10W CW or 25W SSB
  • Proprietary solderless aluminum coupling loop. This coupling loop design can be used with any types of coax cable feed-lines. Because of its rigidity, the antenna tuning will remain stable, consistent and will prevent SWR fluctuations due to usual coupling loop deformation.
  • The three sections collapsible portable mast allows easy storage, fast deployment and ease of use in all conditions. No need to play with multiple tubular PVC sections to assemble the antenna.
  • The bottom of the telescopic mast is equipped with a stainless steel 3/8-24 threaded hole for easy tripod installation on the tuning box 3/8-24 screw.
  • The 12’ RG-58 with integrated RFI choke feed-line decouples the coupling loop from the radio which is essential to prevent SWR fluctuation while rotating the antenna or moving the coax cable around.
  • Our custom made capacitors which are equipped with a 6:1 reducer, offer a smooth and consistent tuning while providing the highest efficient performance on the market.
  • The Condor Mole military bag offers easy storage, transportation and protection for the unit.
  • The unit is now equipped with a NEW larger Delrin tuning knob for smoother tuning and operation.
  • A 48″ diameter BOOSTER KIT for 15M to 40M can be purchased separately.
  • The base of the tuning unit is equipped with an aluminum anodized base plate. That base plate can be placed directly on a flat surface or can be mounted on a tripod (14-20 thread or 3/8 through hole for CHA JAWMOUNT installation).
  • The CHA F-LOOP Plus 2.0 comes with everything included with the CHA F-LOOP 2.0 + 36” diameter collapsible loop radiator made of two sections of 1” 6061-T6 aluminum alloys pipe + 7″ diameter aluminum coupling loop.

The antenna system consists of:

1 X CHA F-LOOP 2.0 tuning box
2 X LMR-400 coax cable radiator
1 X Dual Female connector
1 X 12’ with integrated RFI choke feed-line
1 X Condor Molle Military Bag
1 X Proprietary coupling loop
1 X Telescopic Mast
