Experiments Look to Leverage Low-Latency HF to Shave Microseconds off Trade Times

ons, 20/06/2018 - 20:02

Experimental operations now under way on HF appear aimed at leveraging low-latency HF propagation to shave microseconds from futures market trades and gain a competitive edge in a field where millionths of a second can mean winning or losing. Bloomberg on June 18 reported on a secretive antenna facility near Maple Park, in Kane County, Illinois, and speculated that futures traders might be looking to take advantage of lower-latency HF propagation over state-of-the-art microwave links and undersea cables, where even the slightest path delay could compromise a transaction. The facility is not far from a major futures data center. As the Bloomberg article explained, “Rapidly sending data from there to other important market centers can help the speediest traders profit from price differences for related assets. Those money-making opportunities often last only tiny fractions of a second.”

Radio amateur Bob Van Valzah, KE9YQ, said in a May blog post that he recently stumbled onto the first evidence of HF radio futures trading at a site in West Chicago, Illinois. There, he spotted HF log-period dipole arrays on a pole, and a microwave dish he determined was aimed at a Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) data center. Additional research led him to the antenna facility in Maple Park, Illinois, which also sported a microwave dish that appeared aimed in the direction of the CME data center. Two approximately 170-foot towers on the site support a directional wire array for HF. Van Valzah is a performance engineer on leave from the high-frequency — no pun intended — trading field.

Bloomberg said the company behind the Kane County project is New Line Networks, LLC, a joint venture of Chicago-based Jump Trading, LLC, and New York-based Virtu Financial, Inc. While no FCC Part 5 Experimental license appears to have been assigned to New Line Networks, WH2XVO is assigned to partner Virtu Financial, which assumed the license from Services Development Company LLC.

Sites listed on the license are Aurora and Chicago, Illinois, in addition to Homer, Alaska, and Secaucus, New Jersey — home to several financial firms and right across the Hudson River from many more in New York City. Part 5 Experimental license WI2XAJ has been assigned to Toggle Communications, which is using the West Chicago site and appears to be experimenting with a similar system from other sites. Other entities may also be conducting similar experiments.

The Experimental licensed systems use a variety of frequency shift-keying modes, including FSK, AFSK, QPSK, and 8-PSK, on frequencies ranging from about 6 MHz to 24 MHz and power levels from 20 kW ERP to nearly 50 kW ERP, depending on the Experimental license in question. Van Valzah pointed out in his blog post that, while HF is low bandwidth, unreliable, and expensive, “you can’t beat it for latency.”

Speculation is that the systems are taking advantage of software-defined radio (SDR) techniques and technology. Transmitter equipment information on the Experimental license application for WH2XVO was redacted from the public filing.

ARRL reached out to the point of contact listed on the WH2XVO application but has not heard back. — Thanks to Southgate Amateur Radio News for some information

Amateur Radio Honored in Advance of Field Day 2018 on June 23 – 24

ons, 20/06/2018 - 17:01

Each year as ARRL Field Day approaches, state and local governments traditionally take advantage of the opportunity to honor Amateur Radio in the form of various proclamations. This list of those that took part is not necessarily comprehensive.

  • In Alabama, Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed June 18 – 24 as “Amateur Radio Week.” A delegation of radio amateurs from around the state were on hand as Governor Ivey signed the proclamation.
  • In Idaho, Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter has proclaimed June 18 – 24 as “Amateur Radio Week.” The proclamation declares that Amateur Radio has proved its relevance in the modern world by providing emergency communications when other system failed in the wake of hurricanes and other disasters.
  • In Massachusetts, at the urging of State Senator Bruce Tarr, N1UIU, Massachusetts Governor Charles Baker signed a proclamation declaring June 24 as “Amateur Radio Day” in the Bay State.
  • In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster has declared the week of June 18 – 24 as “Amateur Radio Week.” He encouraged South Carolinians to recognize radio amateurs for “their many contributions, including emergency communications and other public service work, to the continued safety of the residents of the Palmetto State.”
  • In the state of Washington, Governor Jay Inslee proclaimed the week of June 18 – 24 as “Amateur Radio Week,” encouraging recognition of the importance of Amateur Radio operators, “on whom we can rely during emergencies or disasters within the state.”
  • The Orange Park, Florida, Town Council designated June 18 – 24 as “Amateur Radio Week,” recognizing Amateur Radio’s role in furthering international goodwill as well as its public service in disasters, emergencies, and during public events.
  • The Town Board of Cicero, New York, recognized the Liverpool Amateur Radio Club for its “fundamental role in disaster communications” for the town. The Town Board cited LARC’s participation in Field Day at William Park on Field Day weekend.
  • The City Council of Goose Creek, South Carolina, proclaimed June 17 – 23 as “Amateur Radio Week.” Mayor Greg Habib said radio amateurs “further demonstrate their value in public assistance by providing free radio communications for local events.”
  • The City of Midland, Michigan, proclaimed June 18 – 24 as “Amateur Radio Week” in that community, recognizing “the efforts of ham radio operators, especially during times of emergency.” Mayor Maureen Donker presented Midland Amateur Radio Club President Al Bailey with the proclamation on June 11 during a City Council meeting.
  • The Volusia County, Florida, County Council has designated June 17 – 24 as “CQ Florida Amateur Radio Week,” honoring Amateur Radio generally and the group CQ Florida in particular. The Council urged residents to honor Amateur Radio operators “for providing a bridge between peoples, societies and countries by creating friendships and sharing information.”
  • In Ohio, the Hancock County Commission designated June 18 – 24 as “Amateur Radio Week,” noting that the Hancock AuxComm Team will host a Field Day event at Clarke Field in Newell.

More than 1,400 clubs and groups in the US and Canada have let ARRL know of their plans to be on the air for Field Day by registering their locations on the Field Day locator page.

On June 20 and 21, the Tanusha satellites will be connected to an antenna on the ISS Russian Service Module and transmit voice messages on 437.050 MHz FM with 145.800 MHz FM relay.

The AMSAT-NA website says:

ARISS-Russia, in collaboration with the Southwest State University in Kursk, Russia, are developing a series of educational CubeSat satellites called Tanusha.

Two Tanusha CubeSats were developed by students at Southwest State University and were hand-deployed by cosmonauts during an August 2017 extravehicular activity. These two CubeSats are performing cluster flight experiments through communications links.

A second set of CubeSats, Tanusha 3 & 4 were launched earlier this year and are currently on-board ISS. Tanusha 3 & 4 are planned to be hand deployed by Cosmonauts in August. They will perform even more comprehensive cluster flight objectives than Tanusha 1 & 2.

On June 20, Tanusha 3 will be connected to one of the ARISS Service Module antennas and will transmit from 0730-1200 UTC on 437.05 MHz. These FM transmissions will include greetings from students in several languages, including Russian, English, Spanish and Chinese.

On June 21, Tanusha 4 will be connected to one of the ARISS Service Module antennas and will transmit from 0730-1200 UTC on the same frequency: 437.050 MHz.

The ARISS-Russia team plan to also retransmit these signals on the standard ARISS 2-meter downlink, 145.80 MHz using the JVC Kenwood D700 radio that is still on-board ISS. All are invited to listen to the CubeSats from ISS on 437.050 and/or 145.800 MHz FM.

Note: the Doppler shift for the 437.050 MHz signal will be +/-10 kHz.

DXpedition Team Set to Depart for Baker Island, Ducie Island Preparations on Target

tir, 19/06/2018 - 17:19

Two major DXpeditions are on track to make many DXers happy campers this year. Just ahead is the KH1/KH7Z Baker Island DXpedition, which commemorates the 81st anniversary of aviator Amelia Earhart’s disappearance on July 2, 1937, near Baker and Howland islands, as well as “the commitment and sacrifices” of the Hui Panalā’au (loosely translates to “society of colonists”) — young high school graduates from Hawaii who were taken to colonize Baker, Howland, and Jarvis islands from 1935 until 1942, and who began construction of a runway for Earhart to land in 1937. The islands were bombed the day after Pearl Harbor, killing two, and the colonists were removed by the US Coast Guard in 1942.

The team’s enthusiasm level was reported to be high, as the KH1/KH7Z Baker Island team prepared to depart Pago Pago, American Samoa, on June 20 aboard the Nai’a, en route to Baker Island. The DXpedition is scheduled to fire up around 0000 UTC on June 28, with eight operating positions active on all open bands. The team will be on the air around the clock — and on 20 meters continuously — for the following 10 days. The KH1/KH7Z team consists of 14 operators.

“But any plan is only good until you meet the enemy in the field of battle,” the Baker Island DXpedition team said in a news release. “We plan on listening to our pilots. Please tell them if we are missing an opening or opportunity. We can and will adjust to the propagation.” Baker Island is the fifth Most-Wanted DXCC entity, according to Club Log.

As reported, KH1/KH7X will employ FT8 digital mode to find openings that might not be obvious and to serve as a beacon. “When we find an opening, we will put as many radios/modes/ops on as we can,” the team said.

The KH1/KH7X group helped to develop the WSJT-X software version that incorporates an FT8 DXpedition Mode (version 1.9.0). The DXpedition said using FT8 DXpedition mode may allow the operators to “expand” the bands they are able to use at this point in the solar cycle. The DXpedition’s band plan page includes a guide to using FT8 DXpedition Mode. The Dateline DX Association (DDXA) is sponsoring the DXpedition to Baker Island. The Pacific Islands Refuges and Monuments Office of the US Fish and Wildlife Service granted the DDXA permission to land and operate on the uninhabited island.

Ducie Island (VP6D)

Meanwhile, the VP6D Ducie Island DXpedition reports that its preparations remain on schedule for its October 20 – November 3 operation. The DXpedition has announced that 15-year-old Mason Matrazzo, KM4SII, of Clemmons, South Carolina, will join the VP6D Pilot Team. In 2017, he operated from Iceland as TF/KM4SII, and in July 2018, he will operate from Curacao as PJ2/KM4SII. Mason will work with North America and Chief Pilot Glenn Petri, KE4KY.

The Braveheart, owned by Nigel Jolly, K6NRJ, will transport the 14-member Ducie Island team to its South Pacific destination in September, sailing from Mangareva, French Polynesia. The Perseverance DX Group (PDXG) is sponsoring the VP6D DXpedition. Ducie Island is the 26th Most-Wanted DXCC entity, according to Club Log.

ITU officially confirms: Z6 prefix is illegal

søn, 17/06/2018 - 14:58

“In a repost by YT9TP (Serbia) it would appear that the International Telecommunication Union has officially confirmed use of the Z6 prefix is illegal.

This from ITU Operational Bulletin No. 1149, Jun”e 1st 2018.

Call sign series can be allocated only to the administrations of the ITU Member States by world radio communication conferences or, between
radio communication conferences, by the ITU Secretary-General.

In this respect, the attention of the ITU administrations is drawn to the
fact that ITU has not allocated call sign series Z6 to any of its Member States. Consequently, the utilization of call signs series Z6 by any entity without a formal allocation and consent of the ITU represents an unauthorized and illegal usage of this international numbering resource.”

70MHz experimental NoVs now easier

fre, 15/06/2018 - 17:25

Following agreement with Ofcom, the RSGB is pleased to announce that a new much faster online process is now available for all Full Licensees to access the 70.5-71.5MHz experimental band.

Applications can now be made online for a new, annually-renewable Notice of Variation.

It works in a similar way to the 146-147MHz NoV.

This replaces the previous special research permit process and is expected to spur digital innovation at VHF.

Prospective applicants should ensure they read the supplementary information and must observe the NoV power and geographic restrictions.

It is a highly integrated product combining the function of a 12 VDC Uninterruptible Power System (UPS), high capacity battery charger, power distribution and capable power monitoring.

Its rugged design works well in both field, mobile and base station applications providing both automatic power changeover in the event of loss of DC power as well as built in battery charging capability for batteries with capacity up to 100Ah.

Multiple overload protected outputs and built in USB charger ports make this a powerful combination of features simplifying the station, improving reliability and reducing the clutter of messy and inefficient DC wiring. The interconnections between all of these functions are handled internally within POWERplus.

Here is what POWERplus does:

• UPS

o Multi-chemistry 3 and 4 stage high efficiency charger
o Adjustable charge rate and current monitoring

• USB CHARGER
o Dual USB charger outputs for phone/tablet/LED light charging
o Current limited outputs

• POWER MANAGEMENT
o Automatically disconnects the radio if the battery voltage is too high to protect your radio if something goes wrong with your DC Input.
o Monitors the battery and alerts you if the battery is getting too low and will even automatically disconnect to protect the battery from deep discharge.
o User adjustable DC output current limits
o Manual or automatic control of output groups

• POWER REPORTING
o Realtime monitoring of DC power supply and battery voltage and current
o Realtime monitoring of output loads
o Graphical indication of instantaneous load current

• ALARMS

Space Station Digital Amateur Radio TV System Transmitter Determined to be Defective

tor, 14/06/2018 - 19:29

The Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) “Ham Video” digital Amateur Radio TV (DATV) transmitter on the International Space Station (ISS) is reported to be defective, with onboard repair not possible. Also known as HamTV, the DATV system stopped working in mid-April, and a subsequent test on June 1 using a second L/S band patch antenna on the Columbus module had failed. ARISS-EU Mentor Gaston Bertels, ON4WF, said ARISS plans to return the transmitter to Earth to repair, pending space agency approvals and availability of ARISS funds.

“Schools and crew members performing educational ARISS school contacts are delighted to use Ham Video,” Bertels said. “We will do the best we can to restart this service as soon as possible.”

Following extensive testing, the Ham TV system was first used for an ARISS school contact in February 2016. — Thanks to ARISS

A Pause in Storming : Solar Storm Forecast 06-14-2018

tor, 14/06/2018 - 17:55

“Space Weather quiets down this week as the hoped for mini-solarstorm misses Earth to the south. Aurora photographers will need to wait a while longer before another coronal hole rotates into the Earth-strike zone and sends us a new chance for a solar storm. Amateur radio operators are smiling this week as a new region rotates into Earth view, boosting the solar flux back into marginal levels for radio propagation. This region will be joined by a second region next week that should boost solar flux even more, just in time for Field Day 2018. GPS users should also be enjoying good signals this week. However, glitches may increase at low latitudes next week once that second active region rotates into view. Learn the details of these new regions, what’s coming from the Sun’s backside, and see what else the Sun has in store!

Reverse Beacon Network Beta Testing Separate Spot Stream for FT8

ons, 13/06/2018 - 12:18

As a beta test, the popular Reverse Beacon Network (RBNhas announced that it’s now offering a separate telnet feed for FT8 spots (telnet.reversebeacon.net port 7001), in addition to the current spot feed (telnet.reversebeacon.net port 7000), which will be repurposed to handle only CW and RTTY spots. In addition, a beta version of Aggregator Version 5 that can handle FT8 spots received from WSJT-Xwill be available on the RBN website, with instructions on how RBN node operators can configure their nodes to spot FT8 call signs on one or more bands; this will not interfere with the ability to spot CW and RTTY call signs, the RBN team assured in its announcement, explaining its reasoning for the move. The beta test follows a limited alpha test aimed at getting a feel for the spot load and other implications of carrying FT8 spots on the RBN.

“The most striking characteristic of FT8 spots is their sheer quantity,” the RBN announcement said, citing weekday statistics from May 23 and 24 when FT8 spots represented 86% and 87% of all spots, respectively, while CW spots were 13% and 14%, respectively, and RTTY spots were below 1%. Throughput on both days totaled some 30,000 spots.

“Whether due to the startling popularity of the new mode, or to the ability to spot stations at 22 dB below the noise level, it seems obvious that adding FT8 spots to our spot flow could have a huge impact on the infrastructure of the RBN,” the RBN announcement said. “These numbers suggest that if only 20 – 30 RBN nodes added FT8 spots, those spots could outnumber the total CW and RTTY spots being delivered by the 140 – 150 nodes currently active on the network, doubling the total required throughput.”

The RBN team said it wanted to find out whether RBN servers would be up to the task before the fall contest season. “Operators of ‘retail’ DX clusters are encouraged to offer the option of RBN spots with and without FT8 spots, as they now often give users a choice between spot streams with and without Skimmerspots, and to advertise when they begin to carry FT8 spots,” the announcement said.

A beta version of Aggregator Version 5 that can handle FT8 spots received from WSJT-X will be available on the RBN website, along with instructions on how RBN node operators can configure their nodes to spot FT8 signals on one or more bands.

“We will closely monitor how the RBN servers handle this new load, as more and more nodes begin sending FT8 spots,” the announcement said, adding that the RBN reserves the right to take any necessary steps to protect the core mission of the RBN, including shutting off the FT8 stream on major CW and RTTY contest weekends or discontinuing FT8 spotting altogether. Even then, PSKReporter would continue to carry FT8 spots, the announcement pointed out.

“We hope we’re not doing this in a vacuum,” the RBN team said, noting that it’s been collecting the views of contesters and DXers, “and we think that we’re headed in the right direction.”

The RBN team consists of KM3T, N4ZR, PY1NB, SV3SJ, and W3OA.

Canadian Radio Amateurs Petition Parliament to End Deliberate Interference

tir, 12/06/2018 - 18:28

Radio Amateurs in Canada — primarily in the Province of Quebec — have mounted a petition drive demanding that members of the House of Commons prompt decisive regulatory action against a Quebec resident who has been causing deliberate interference. The petition does not spell out the particulars of the allegations but says the alleged offender — apparently unlicensed — is already known to authorities. Petitioners claim that the individual’s “malicious intentions” have been “threatening the security of emergency radio communication in the province,” and they called upon Parliamentary lawmakers “to ensure the security” of HF radio communication.

“For 2 years, a Nicolet resident, near Trois-Rivières [Quebec], illegally set up a transmitting radio station and is generating interference on purpose,” the petition recounts. “Amateur Radio operators in Quebec have identified the illegal radio station and brought it to the attention of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada, and its inspectors seized the individual’s radio equipment.” One of ISED’s functions is telecommunications regulation.

According to the petition, the alleged offender “acquired new equipment right away and returned to jamming the airwaves.” The petition identifies the alleged offender as a male who is “known to police in Nicolet and Trois-Rivières” and “has regular encounters with the law.”

“We are calling on the government to provide more support to the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, so that it can intervene more decisively in this matter,” the petition declared.

Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) — the country’s national Amateur Radio organization — was noncommittal. “While we have not had a chance to investigate the specific details of the incidents [that] the petition refers to, we agree with the importance of acting to support the security of high frequency communications,” RAC said this week.

As of June 12, the online petition had gathered more than 625 signatures, primarily from Quebec and Ontario. Canada has more than 50,000 Amateur Radio license
