Hiram Percy Maxim /150 Event

The Hiram Percy Maxim

150th Birthday Celebration

Operating Event

September 2, 2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the League’s first president and cofounder, Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW. As with earlier birthday milestones, ARRL is holding an operating event to celebrate Maxim’s legacy.

Duration: The 9-day event begins

0000 UTC August 31 and runs until

2359 UTC September 8.

Objective: To participate, simply find stations operating in the event (many of which will add /150 to their call signs) and contact as many as possible.

Eligibility: All amateur stations may participate. W1AW and all ARRL members are eligible to append /150 to their call sign during this event (this includes DX stations who are members, who may operate as call sign/150 if permitted by the regulations of their country of license).

Exchange: All WNE stations send RST and their ARRURAC section. DX stations send RST and DX

Bands: All amateur bands LF/HF/ VHF/UHF/SHF/microwave/light (excluding 60, 30, 17, and 12 meters).

Modes: Three mode groups will be recognized in the event: CW, Phone and Digital.

Scoring: Cabrillo log files must be supplied. ARRL will calculate the final scores based on the participant uploads to our event web app at http://contests.arrl.org/arrlHPM150scoressubmission.php

Multipliers: There are 84 multipliers in total. Contact just once each of the 83 ARRL and RAC sections (RAC sections include the Canadian “NT” Northern Territories), and DX. See http://www.arrl.org/contest-sections-list for ARRL/RAC sections.

QSO Points: Contacts with W1AW/150 will earn 3 points per QSO; contacts with any ARRL member will earn 2 points per QSO (these stations will also identify as call sign/150), and contacts with nonmembers will earn 1 point each (these stations will identify with their call sign only).

Bonus Points: All bonus points will be applied upon submission of entries to the web app. 150 bonus points will be earned by successfully completing one or more activities as described below.

  • Contacting W1AW/150 on each band and mode will earn bonus points for each band/mode contact (no band/mode duplicates are permitted).
  • ARRL members earn bonus points.
  • Use of social media to publicize this event and/or your participation before, during, or after the event.
  • QRP operation (using 5 W PEP output or fewer throughout the entire event).
  • Making at least 20 or more portable contacts.
  • Completing 150 or more QSOs.

Submissions: Cabrillo log files are required and must be uploaded via web app at http://contests.arrl.org/arrlHPM150scoressubmission.php

No email or paper submissions will be accepted.

Scoring Calculations: Calculations are made by ARRL when you submit your entry via the web app and are calculated as follows:

Total QSO points accumulated on all band/mode combinations x total multipliers (84 maximum) = subtotal + total bonus points earned = grand total.

Online certificates will be awarded and will available via download only at http://contests.arrl.org/certificates.php

Results will be publicized at www.arrl.org/hpm150-birthdaycelebration.php

Additional information: Participating ARRL members who use Logbook of The World (LoTW) are encouraged to create a separate LoTW certificate for their call sign/150, and to upload their logs for this event using their /150 certificate. For information on adding your call sign/150 to your LoTW account, see https://lotw.arrl.org/lotw-help/multiple-callsigns-locations/?lang=en

According to his announcement: “Hiram Percy Maxim Contest Log 1.0 is very easy and intuitive to use. It has all the features that you have come to expect and enjoy in my software including rig interface, current score statistics, sections changing color when worked (and spotted), DX spotting, super check partial, sending CW, a map which colors in worked sections, interface with many digital programs, creation of your Cabrillo file for log submission and much more!”
